McCain’s crowd numbers

Sam Stein of the Huffington Post writes that:

“John McCain returned to the campaign trail on Monday, only this time without his popular vice presidential pick, Sarah Palin. The results were somewhat less than enthusiastic. As reported by MSNBC’s First Read, the Republican presidential nominee addressed a crowd of roughly 3,000 people in a stadium that seats 16,000.”

Bloomberg is reporting much of the same:

“In recent days, journalists attending the rallies have been raising questions about the crowd estimates with the campaign. In a story on Sept. 11 about Palin’s attraction for some Virginia women voters, Washington Post reporter Marc Fisher estimated the crowd to be 8,000, not the 23,000 cited by the campaign.”
