>Letter: Time for Change in Middletown Township

>The ongoing rhetoric from the man occupying the mayor’s chair is enough to make an intelligent citizen “sick to their stomach” !
This official has no ideas of his own and the only “tool in his toolkit” is intimidation and broken promises.

The conduct displayed at township committee meetings is reprehensible as he attempts to control any dissent or differing points of view with the “five minute rule”. The latest attempt to control the opinions of the public is the despicable township act of ordering removed, the informational sign for Candidates Night at the Lincroft School on October 28th from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m..sponsored by the Lincroft Village Green Association and moderated by the League of Women’s Voters. This could not be more insulting to the intelligence of the voters in this community. Is this just another attempt to control information damaging to this majority. What are they hiding from?

In my opinion this is more of the vicious, dirty politics gripping this township under the current Republican majority. The attempt at character assassination of the Democratic candidate distributed by this bunch of bullies on a mailer is atrocious. It certainly does tell us something about the authors and their fitness for office. They are not qualified to administrate in a town of 68,000 residents of diverse political persuasions

.Every one of those residents are entitled to representation and that’s not happening under Scharfenberger and his comrades. Government in Middletown, under three decades of a Republican majority has become a dictatorship that only represents the Republican party faithful. That must change!!

>Are Little Canvassers Harassing Pallone Supporters?

>People working on behalf of the Anna Little campaign were canvassing parts of Middletown on Saturday and I think that they maybe a bit over zealous by the looks of what was left in a few mailboxes of Frank Pallone supporters.

A Little/Tea Party canvasser left a hand written note on some Little campaign literature that stated ” Based on the lawn sign I see on your lawn, I know your supporting Pallone. I hope that this may change your mind. Feel free to contact our campaign with only questions that you may have. – have a nice day! ” (click on picture below)

Now of course, this is nothing to get all worked up over even though I have always been told that it was not appropriate to leave such things in peoples mailboxes while canvasing neighbourhoods. On a scale of 1 to 10 this maybe ranks a 1. It’s what happened later that night where the problem comes in.

At approximately 9:30pm a white 4-door pick-up truck and what looked like a red Ford Mustang was spotted by the resident who had had the Little campaign flyer with the handwritten note left in their mailbox. The resident opened the door to see what was going on outside, only to witness a few individuals hastily jump back into their vehicles and speed off.

In the morning, while retrieving their newspaper from the driveway, the resident saw that the Pallone for Congress sign that had been on the front lawn was missing, all that was left was the wire frame the it was attached to. Also out in the street in front of his house was the neighbor’s campaign sign that supported the local Middletown Democratic candidates Byrnes & Mahoney.

This resident was outraged that this type of shenanigans is taking place around Middletown by members of the Anna Little campaign and wanted other to be aware of it. The resident stated to me that “I guess this is what they mean by Tea Party Approved. They will never win an election by threats and bullying people into voting for them. That is how they operate in the Communist countries of the world, not here in America!”

I happen to agree, I hope that Anna Little see fit to address this incident to those that have volunteered on her behalf to work on her campaign. I’ve heard of other people of questionable character (people with felony convictions) working closely on her campaign, so before this kind of harassment gets out of hand she needs to address it and request that those responsible no long work on her campaign.

>Speaking of Signs; Has Halloween Tricks All Ready Started In Middletown With The Taking Of Byrnes and Mahoney Signs ?

>In the 5 days that I had been away attending my grandfathers funeral in Utah, I noticed in my return that here have been a number of Byrnes & Mahoney signs missing from the roadsides that had been there previously.

I know periodically that signs are taken by kids as pranks or are removed by Township, County or State employees if the signs are thought to be on land that is owned by either entity, but when only the signs of one group of candidates are being taken away and the others remain that raises the red flag.
Such is the case with Middletown Committeeman Sean Byrnes and his running mate Mary Mahoney, their signs seem to be disappearing and not just from the roadside but from private property and resident homes as well, while their republican opponents signs are still visible on lawns and on roadways.
As confirmation of what I have been witnessing, I have been sent an email and found a letter to the editor posted at the Independent’s website that discusses exactly what I had been feeling since my return:

“Boo! Once again, Halloween (dirty?) tricks are in evidence in Middletown. On Palmer Avenue, Leonardville Road by the Navy underpass, and other Middletown locations there is a pattern of Scharfenberger-Settembrino election signs being placed very close in front of Byrnes-Mahoney signs, blocking their visibility. Gremlins have also placed some Little signs to block the other side of Byrnes signs.

In the pre-Halloween spirit of generosity, I choose to believe that the disrespectful sign positioning is due to the fearful over-zealousness of campaign workers, like the young goblin caught in the act late at night. Perhaps Mayor Scharfenberger is not aware of the tactics. I call upon the mayor to take responsibility, order the situation corrected at once, and not sanction repetition of the tactic.”

And the Letter from the Independent:
Taking political signs impedes political process

The Middletown Democrats have been experiencing an appreciable loss of political signs. Perhaps you have noticed where they are missing. Those are the signs that have the names of Sean Byrnes and Mary Mahoney on them. They seem to be disappearing from various parts of the township.

I have been trying to police them, and I have concluded that some of our signs are actually stolen in broad daylight. The situation has been studied, and I have given it a great deal of attention.

I have concluded that it is not the local raccoons that are attracted to our signs, but it may be the rats. The attraction for Democratic signs has been so great that whenever Democratic signs make an appearance with other signs, it is ours that are taken. Once they are taken, they are never to be seen again. I am not trying to call this kidnapping, but it may be close to the same thing.

Whatever you want to call this, there is one thing for certain. The perpetrators are impeding the political process, which is the basis of our democracy.

Do adults really need to play these silly games? If so, it could only lead to one conclusion in peoples minds and that is, Gerry Scharfenberger and the rest of the Middletown GOP are deathly afraid of losing this election, after a 5 year record of raising taxes by 45%, I would be afraid of losing also. Even still, to have members of your party taking down or block your opponents signs with your own, is childish. It’s time to grow up!

Dirty Trick, not Treats

I wish that all the tricks were due to Halloween, but the people behind the evil masks are shameless local politicians and their supporters.

The situation is very simple. After over 25 years of “breathtakingly arrogant” rule and patronage, the Middletown Republicans are terrified. As a result, they are resorting to such dirty tricks as making a sandwich of “Pat Walsh” signs with theirs placed as the bread two inches away from hers., hiding their message. How silly, how sneaky, and it won’t work!

Even worse, they are trying to decimate her reputation by dredging up false charges, resolved 10 years ago, by quoting her opponent in the old complaint who paid someone else to file what was really his own suit against her.

Our citizens are not that gullible and won’t be fooled. The tricks will magically become a treat for Middletown, as more will vote for open government by Pat Walsh and Jim Grenafege rather than continued canards and law- breaking by the current majority.

“Let the sun shine in!”
