AARP New Jersey Applauds State for Helping Vulnerable Elderly with Their Energy

New, Innovative Auto-Enrollment Process Brings Energy Assistance to Tens of Thousands of Additional Low-Income NJ Seniors

Trenton, NJ: AARP New Jersey today applauded Governor Jon S. Corzine and his administration for their leadership in significantly expanding the distribution of energy assistance benefits to low-income elderly New Jersey households. By our State’s actions in raising the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) maximum income levels to match that of the State’s PAAD/Lifeline program, approximately 50,000 additional low-income NJ families are receiving assistance.

“Governor Corzine demonstrated his commitment to focus on the energy assistance need of New Jersey’s most vulnerable older citizens,” said AARP New Jersey Senior State Director Jim Dieterle. “Energy costs continue to pose serious affordability challenges, particularly in this difficult economic climate; AARP commends our State’s efforts to combat this growing problem.”

AARP worked closely with the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), the Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) and the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to streamline the enrollment process. Residents who were enrolled in PAAD, the state’s prescription drug program, and the Lifeline Utility Assistance Program were automatically enrolled in LIHEAP. Many have also been automatically enrolled in the Universal Service Fund (USF).

“AARP worked with our state partners to make this a reality,” said Dieterle. “In the past, the vast majority of New Jerseyans 50 and older who could have received heating assistance had not even applied partly because of an arduous application process. The new system of auto-enrollment helped thousands of households across the state this past heating season. AARP thanks the Governor, DHSS, DCA, and the BPU for their collaborative efforts that have resulted in one of the best, if not the best, low-income energy assistance programs in the nation.”

New Corzine Video: The Enemy of the Economic Downturn

The Corzine campaign released a new video this morning featuring leaders from across New Jersey like Cory Booker,Rush Holt,Ray Lesniak, Teresa Ruiz and Dick Codey among others, that highlight Governor Jon Corzine’s leadership on the economy and job creation.

This video marks the begining of a new focus for the campaign, highlighting the positives achievements of Jon Corzine and the direction in which he is steering the State, as opposed to some of the negative attacks, that have been working but which have been taking away from the positve image and light that Jon Corzine wants to project for himself.

This video is a great first step in that direction and well worth watching.

Obama Email Calls for Support Of Jon Corzine

I received the following email in my inbox this morning from President Obama. The President is urging supporters to get behind the Corzine campaign and support the good work the Governor has done for New Jersey.
The President states that “Jon is a fighter for the middle class. He created a strong economic recovery plan designed to retain and attract business, instituted major reforms to ease unfair property tax burdens across the state, and made critical investments in schools and transportation infrastructure that will leave New Jersey stronger and more competitive in the years to come”
I think the President is right, Jon Corzine needs our support, read on:

Friend —

Last Thursday, I visited Holmdel, NJ to stand with a great leader for New Jersey — your governor, Jon Corzine. Jon and I were joined by thousands of people like you who share our commitment to building a better future for New Jersey and our nation.

We live in challenging times. Now more than ever, we need leaders with the strength to make tough decisions and the courage to do the right thing — leaders who bring people together for a common purpose, and fight for the most vulnerable among us. Jon is one of those leaders.

I’m proud to have Jon as a partner as we all work to get our economy back on track, and I hope to work with him for years to come. But if I learned one thing from my campaign last year, it’s that none of us can do it alone. It will take thousands of people like you coming together and working as one to build a better future for New Jersey.

Today, I’m hoping you’ll stand with me to support a bold leader for New Jersey. Please volunteer for Jon’s campaign today.

The people of New Jersey know the cost of this economic crisis. The past months have not been easy, and weathering this storm has tested our spirit and required great sacrifice. But in Jon, you have a governor who has built consensus to help families get through it, while putting the state on a path to long-term prosperity.

In trying times, Jon is a fighter for the middle class. He created a strong economic recovery plan designed to retain and attract business, instituted major reforms to ease unfair property tax burdens across the state, and made critical investments in schools and transportation infrastructure that will leave New Jersey stronger and more competitive in the years to come.

I know Jon’s not done yet. We have a lot more work to do. Jon has set New Jersey in the right direction, and if you stand with him — and with me — the time and effort we invest today will pay off ten fold in the better New Jersey we’ll build together.

The stakes in this election are high, so I’m asking you to do your part — volunteer for Jon’s campaign today.

President Barack Obama

Obama To Make Corzine Campaign Appearence

President Obama will be coming to New Jersey on July 16th to give the Corzine campaign a lift.

The President will join the Governor and other dignitaries in New Brunswick, at Voorhees Mall on the campus of Rutgers University.

In the email that announced the President’s visit Governor Corzine states:

” I’ve written to you before about the importance of keeping our hard-won progressive victories from November going and about moving New Jersey forward in-step with the Obama Administration.

Now, I want you to hear it directly from the President himself.

Vice President Biden was already here and got our campaign started with a bang. On July 16th, President Barack Obama will join me at Rutgers University in New Brunswick to help to kick our campaign into a whole new gear.

President Obama isn’t just a close friend of mine; he’s a great friend to our state. After eight long years, we finally have a partner in Washington who shares our values and vision for a more progressive New Jersey.

Together, we are creating green jobs, providing universal access to healthcare for kids, protecting the most vulnerable among us, and ensuring all our children have access to a quality education — regardless of where they live.

We are doing all of this despite a challenging worldwide economic crisis, and I’m proud of the great progress that Barack Obama and I have already have made.

But we still have more to do, and with a partner in Washington who shares our values and priorities, I’m confident in what we can accomplish in the next four years.

I’m honored that President Obama will be on hand in New Jersey to recognize the important work we’re doing, and I hope you will join us.”

If you would like to join President Obama in his support of the Governor’s re-election you can RSVP >>> Here to reserve free tickets for the event
